I’ve been doing some research for a new course I’m writing and I’ve come across something scientists have called ‘The Overview Effect’. It describes what happens when astronauts view the earth from space and they have such a profound experience it completely changes their perspective on everything, for ever.
It struck me as a brilliant way to illustrate the idea of trying to get a new perspective on something when you’re stuck, like with a creative problem at work or at home. It’s also a brilliant, awe-inspiring watch. Philosopher David Loy commented on the first sighting of the earth from space “It gave us such a different perspective. The focus had been we’re going to the stars, we’re going to look at other planets, and suddenly we look back at ourselves and it seems to apply a new kind of self-awareness.” David Beaver is Co-founder of the Overview Institute set up to explore and study this phenomenon.”One of the astronauts said, when we originally went to the moon, our total focus was on the moon,we weren’t thinking about looking back at the earth. But now that we’ve done it, that may have been the most important reason we went.”
If you’re ever wondering if there’s another way to look at your challenge, then have no doubt, there is.
