I’m so excited to be involved with the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity for the 4th year as part of their training faculty over the week of the festival. This year I’m working as a creative coach and mentor to support the next generation of talent across a broad spectrum of the creative industries and disciplines.
The Seven Young Lions Competitions are where the next generation of creative stars go head-to-head in a fast and furious competition where they pitch against their peers.
The competitions are judged by members of the Cannes Lions Jury across print, media, PR, digital, film, marketers, design categories working on not-for-profit briefs. The briefs include:
PR – just 24 hours to shape a PR strategy from a client brief to demonstrate the elements of their creative process, showing how their idea would connect with the organisation’s brand values, how it engages with the public and builds relations with relevant stakeholders.
Film – teams must film and edit an original and captivating 60-second commercial using a camera provided by the Festival, before being judged by the Film jury. They then have 48 hours to come up with an original idea, film their footage and edit it into a captivating ad.
Marketers – for this group it’s all about the brief. Teams will be judged on the clarity of the brief: the knowledge it displays about the product or service, the client organisation and its aims, and the specific goals of the campaign.
As a creative coach and mentor I’m going to be working alongside the teams and hosting debriefs with each of the juries to uncover why the winning teams succeed, and feedback and insights into the whole process. I cannot wait to see this real-time competition unfold. It’s always astounding what people can produce under pressure. Of course I’ll be rooting for the UK teams but willing all of them to rise to the challenge to show what they are creatively made of.
If you’re in Cannes, let me know if you fancy meeting up!
